TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran failed Friday to register what it said would be the worldapos;s largest sandwich in the Guinness book of World Records after people rushed forward and began eating it -- before it was measured.

Event organizers had planned to stuff the 1,500-meter-long sandwich with 700 kg of ostrich meat and 700 kg of chicken, and display it in a park in the capital Tehran.

But as the sandwich was being measured, chaos ensued. The giant snack was gone in minutes, a Reuters witness said, leaving the three Guinness representatives present with a dilemma.

One of the eventapos;s organizers said video footage of the sandwich would be sent to Guinness officials.

"We still think the sandwich will be recorded in the Guinness book because of all the evidence and footage that we will send them," Parvin Shariati said.

Apparently Lancelot turns up on the BBC Merlin tonight. Now, I do not expect him to be like Maloryapos;s Lancelot, because the programme is really Smallville with extra dragons and Giles-from-Buffy as a VeryGrumpy King. But it did remind me how much I love Maloryapos;s Lancelot, the big lug. Particuarly in the grail quest, where he keeps screwing up because heapos;s adulterous and sinful and Not As GoodAs TheTotallyPure And Boring Galahad. And the more he screws up, the more I love him.

At one point he makes a pigapos;s ear of yet another miracle, then finds his horse has been stolen. And has a little cry about it:

"And than he called hymselff a verry wrecch and moste unhappy of all knyghtes, and there he seyde, "apos;My synne and my wyckednes hath brought me unto grete dishonoure For whan I sought worldly adventures for worldely desyres I ever encheved them and had the bettir in every place, and never wasI discomfite in no quarrell, were hit ryght were hit wronge. And now I take uppon me the adventures to seke of holy thynges, now I se and undirstonde that myne old synne hyndryth me and shamyth me...apos;

"So thus he sorowed tyll hit was day, and harde the fowlys synge, than somwhat he was comforted."

This week flew by way too fast. Iapos;ve been trying to get into a more down to earth task at work and suddenly it was Friday morning, guess change of pace can be good.

The awesome part is that I found a non-sucky death metal band. I was about to dismiss these guys as yet another shittily recorded live show, but I got hooked on them within the first couple of riffs and growls.

Dying fetus - dumb band name, awesome sound.

My good vegan friend got engaged. Congrads, Ash/Bronaugh. My floor is within a day or two from completion, congrats to my inner slave-driver.
As soon as thatapos;s done, I can draft up my eccentric IGH hub mount for the trike in hopes that a Californian can bring it to life. Speaking of things that rock: our California trip is going to rock. Iapos;m looking forward to fixie-ing my way to work for a week(itapos;s flat there, how else can I make it exciting?) followed by Halloween critical mass in San Fran.

This semester is out to get me. I swear it is. Remember how last week I said Ihated waiting for my grades and Ihad to wait a week to get an exam grade (oh, Imade a "b" on the exam for those wondering)? Well, I had another exam this week in another class... The professor just emailed the class and let us know it will be *next week* before he gets the exams graded We took the exam on Tuesday and it will be next Wednesday at the earliest before Iknow my grade AARRGGHHHH This semester I think the greatest lesson I will learn is the lesson of patience. Sigh.

Virginia Democratic Sen. Jim Webb warmed up a crowd for Barack Obama in Roanoke, Va., today, asking in regard to John McCain's pick of a running mate, "Do you reall think Sarah Palin is the most qualified person in the Republican-" "Noooooooo," the audience drowned him out.

Then Webb said he was a fan of country music and was reminded of a country song, "I know what I was doing but what was I thinking?" Said Webb, "John McCain's probably singing that song right now."

The correct refrain of the song to which Webb appears to have been referring to goes, "I know what I was feeling/but what was I thinking?"

Unclear how far Webb was trying to carry the allusion. The song is about a guy who lustily runs off with a young beauty in "a little white tank top" knowing he will incur the wrath of her daddy and the local police.

Wed 15 Oct 3:34pm

Yesterday after work we went for a walk to Hut Point. Itrsquo;s an old hut from one of the New Zealand explorers from around 100 yrs ago right at the edge of ldquo;townrdquo;. We couldnrsquo;t get in but itrsquo;s just so neat to see a piece of expedition history. There is a key somewhere on base but we didnrsquo;t have it today. One day wersquo;ll get in. I remember when Steve was down here there was a ldquo;sleepingrdquo; seal that they believe has been there for possibly 100 yrs and the poor little guy is still there. Since everything freezes it doesnrsquo;t decay. Irsquo;m just amazed that a skua or something never ate it (when it was fresh). If I didnrsquo;t know better I would have thought it was fake since it looked so real, if that makes any sense. The weather was pretty weird yesterday. It was very foggy. Fog doesnrsquo;t happen much around here. Therersquo;s not usually enough humidity for fog to it was quite odd. I donrsquo;t know what the temperature was but the fog made it feel bone chilling. There is definitely a difference in wet and dry cold just like it is with wet/dry heat. Dry cold just doesnrsquo;t feel as cold. But, with the fog the little particles in the air were just freezing and it was like a frozen mist. My eyes were tearing from the cold and freezing my eye lashes. I wish I had a picture because it actually looks really neat. After our little hike we came back to eat and then later on we had to go to the safety lecture so we can leave base and go for hikes further away.

Now Irsquo;m just back in my room waiting for dinner. Itrsquo;s still kind of weird to have to wait to eat until certain meal times. Work today was a little hectic. Around lunch time we went to condition 2 at the airfields and the roads to get to the airfields. There are 3 weather conditions here. 1-3. Con. 3 is just normal weather. There is a break down for each condition for visibility and wind. Con. 2 is decreased visibility and all outside activity can only be work related. Con 1 no one can be outside for anything other than emergencies. Since it was Con. 2 outside of town anyone who had to go out for work had to check out with me over the radio. Under normal conditions they donrsquo;t have to tell us theyrsquo;re going out but when the weather gets bad we have to track all movement and have an ETR (estimated time of return). If they are not back exactly on time the search and rescue team will be activated to start looking for them. So that made the radio a little hectic and of course the phones were ringing with everyone wanting to ldquo;double checkrdquo; the weather. So, all that going on made for some craziness.

Tomorrow is American night at Scott Base. Scott Base is the New Zealand base thatrsquo;s about 3km ldquo;down the roadrdquo;. On Thurs nights they open the base up for Americanrsquo;s to come down and hang out. The only time wersquo;re allowed down there is on American night and when their store is open. They have a small little store with gifty items and wersquo;re allowed to pop in there whenever itrsquo;s open. Steve and I (well the whole fire dept) will get a tour of their whole base one day since wersquo;re involved if any incidents happen there. So thatrsquo;ll be neat.

First things firsthellip; WAAAAAAAAHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WAY TO GO PHILLIES Goinrsquo; to the World Series. It would figure they make it to the World Series when wersquo;re down herehellip; with no TV in our roomhellip; and on a weird time schedulehellip; But YAAAY

Ok, so today the weather was back to condition 3. But it was SUPER windy and very cold. When I woke up this morning my little thermometer read -22* C which is -7.5* F. I think thatrsquo;s the coldest itrsquo;s been since the day we got here. With that wind blowing all I have to say is BRRR. But itrsquo;s not really that bad. Today we had to stand outside in formation for a special photo thing and I just had a turnout coat and my jeans and Merrellrsquo;s (slip on kinda shoes). No long johns or anything and I was fine except my chin and right cheek started to get numb lsquo;til we were done.

After that was dinner. Pork, again. Seems like we eat a lot of port and turkey. I havenrsquo;t really missed cooking yet and I surely donrsquo;t miss having to do dishes.

Fri 17 Oct 6:36

We work is starting to become routine. But then it should since thatrsquo;s pretty much all Irsquo;ve done since Irsquo;ve gotten here. I promise there will be pictures one day. I havenrsquo;t even taken any since the day we landed. We have all 4 dispatchers at work but the supervisor wants us to keep working with one of the other girls so until shersquo;s on her own we canrsquo;t go to a normal schedule. Irsquo;ll be on my own as of tomorrow. Scaryhellip; I canrsquo;t wait to go to get into the actual routine instead of working 7 days straight. But no use complaining.

Today itrsquo;s been pretty windy but it got a little warmer. When I got home from work it was -15* C. I didnrsquo;t look at the conversion but I think thatrsquo;s somewhere around 2* F. Itrsquo;s still windy and itrsquo;s been flurrying a little since I sat down here. Yesterday we were here for 1 week. We both agree it feels like wersquo;ve been here for a month already. Tonight is the first night I donrsquo;t have to get up and go to work early.

Still no wildlife yet. Irsquo;ve heard talk that a seal came up and was laying on the ice where they drilled to put a dive shack. They just use a big drill (like what would be used back home for ice fishing but longer I assume) and then come back out and put a little building over the hole. So, I guess the seal decided he wanted to see what was going on and was laying right where they wanted to put the building. Silly. I thought I heard a skua chirping or squawking or whatever they do but no onersquo;s mentioned sight of one yet.

A few icons I whipped up this afternoon. Feel free to gank them- more to come, and credit would be nice, but whatever. Iapos;ve been obsessing a bit about Dr. Horrible, but its finally got me off of Avenue Q and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

*******************************

Ever have days when you wish you could be a chalkboard? So all the things that people tell you that feel like theyapos;ll be there forever could just be scrubbed away in some after school detention special? Maybe a musical? With dancing. And spirit fingers. Some kind of basketball dance number ala Stomp and High School Musical.

I blame Joss Whedon by the way for the fact that my syntax is forever fixated in Buffy-ese, complete with inundated pop culture references that no one else wants to get.

Anyway, back feeling better today. Not right now, obviously, so there will be Lortab and a few hours of sleep and, hopefully, finally, the beach. Because, damnit, I want the ocean.
